SAO PAULO, Brazil—Organized by the Instituto Giramundo Mutuando, a member-organization of the People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS), University of the State of Sao Paulo (UNESP) together with UFSCAR and the Movement of Landless Rural Workers, the Third International Meeting on Agroecology was launched last July 31. The organizers expect more than 2,000 participants including students, teachers, and producers in Brazil, Latin America, and other parts of the world.

The said meeting aims to gather various social movements based in Latin America in order to discuss the current situation of agroecology in Brazil and the region as a whole. Aside from this, participants are also expected to discuss the main threats to food sovereignty in the Latin American region; to intensify the people’s struggles and propose new resistance alternatives.

The first day of discussion focused on the action of social movements for food sovereignty and production in Brazil as well as the destructive impacts of multinational agribusinesses that continue to threaten the survival of rural communities and indigenous peoples in the country.

Representing PCFS in the international meeting are Agrosolidaria Colombia together with Instituto Giramundo both of which shared the regional work of the coalition in Latin America such as the Campaign for People’s Goals for Sustainable Development as the alternative to the post-2015 development agenda. An additional meeting will be held in line with the discussion on sustainable development goals, the post-2015 development agenda, and other projects and initiatives of PCFS.

In the coming days, the discussions will continue addressing issues of food sovereignty and agroecology.
