Rights for Sustainability and Sustainable Development Governance

As part of the Rights for Sustainability (R4S) Initiative, IBON International is inviting all civil society actors and government representatives who will attend the upcoming 13th Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF 13) and the twelfth special session of the UNEP Governing Council/ Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC.SS.XII/GMEF) to its Greenroom activity entitled “Rights for Sustainability and Sustainable Development Governance”, which is slated for February 22, at 13.45 to 15.00h.

Civil Society Workshop on Alternatives and Peoples Struggles for Sustainability: Intensifying People’s Struggles in Defense of the Commons

On January 25, around 62 participants from various civil society organizations and social movements from Latin America, Africa, Asia, Middle East and North Africa, and Europe participated in a self-organized side event in Porto Alegre entitled "Civil Society Workshop on Alternatives and Peoples Struggles for Sustainability".

Global Civil Society Workshop on the Rio+20

The "Global Civil Society Workshop on the Rio+20 Zero Draft and Rights for Sustainability" was held at the Church Center for the United Nations in New York City last January 24. The workshop was attended by more than 70 participants from various civil society organizations (CSOs) and social movements from around the world. It was organized by IBON International in cooperation with Asia Pacific Research Network (APRN), People's Coalition for Food Sovereignty (PCFS) and Centre for Environment and Development (CED) with the support of Diakonia - Asia Regional office, Both ENDS and the World Council of Churches (WCC).

Human rights is key in ensuring development effectiveness in climate finance

UN Independent Expert on Foreign Debt and Human Rights Dr. Cephas Lumina yesterday called on the world’s leaders negotiating the future of the Green Climate Fund to ensure that climate financing is indeed “new and additional” money that would help those most impacted by the changing climate to realize their fundamental human rights.

Farmers groups and advocates nix 'climate-smart agriculture'

The World Bank’s so-called triple win solutions of “Climate Smart Agriculture” drew heavy flak at a side event organized yesterday by five major civil society groups at the ongoing 17th Conference of Parties (COP17) meeting of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) here in Durban, South Africa.

At global gathering on aid: Civil society groups hit US aid policy

International non-government organization IBON International today took the US government to task for its aid policies that have largely influenced how aid is defined according to the interests of donor governments. IBON side-events at the Durban climate summit

IBON International will be holding two side-events on climate finance in the coming Durban climate summit. “Improving development effectiveness in climate finance: challenges and opportunities” is an official COP17 side-event. “Financing climate justice: voices from the South” is a side-event in the summit’s alternative space called the “People’s Space.” People from government and civil society are invited to speak. The two side-events are co-organized with several other civil society organizations.

HLF4 mini-debate: Southern CSOs’ role in capacity development for global policy innovation

As part of our commitment to the upcoming Knowledge and Innovation Space at the 4th High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness (HLF-4) in Busan, South Korea, IBON International is organizing a mini-debate called “Southern CSOs: Receivers or Providers of Capacity Development for Global Policy Innovation?” This mini-debate shall feature speakers discussing successes and problems faced by Southern civil society organizations (CSOs) in capacity development for policy influencing – one side shall be expected to highlight the strengths and opportunities that Southern CSOs possess, while the other side shall highlight the challenges and constraints that they face.

Contribution of IBON International to the Zero Draft of the Outcome Document for Rio+20

Today the world finds itself far off track in realizing the vision of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development. Global economic expansion continues to severely strain the environment. Humanity’s ecological footprint now exceeds the planet’s biocapacity by over 50%, and three of nine planetary boundaries that define the safe operating space for human life on Earth have been breached.
