Job Description: 

Position purpose:

IBON International responds to international demand to provide support in research, education and public information on a wide range of policy issues to peoples’ movements and grassroots empowerment advocates, and links these to international initiatives and networks. For this purpose, IBON International maintains a Policy and Communications Unit (PCU) that produces key outputs in the form of primers, policy briefs, discussion papers, research reports, and other similar publications and presentations.

The PCU Communications Officer will provide communications support for the popular education and public information activities and outputs of PCU, including communications strategy formulation, advising, research writing and communications.   The Communications Officer will get direct guidance from the IBON International Director and PCU head, and coordinative guidance from other IBON program managers, regarding communications strategies and plans.

The successful candidate will be a competent communications planner, writer, and publishing coordinator. S/he will be familiar with key policy areas and corresponding communications themes and debates where IBON International has substantial involvement; and has the capacity to articulate IBON’s position in appropriate written form and publishing platforms. S/he will have high English writing skills, and will be familiar with the technical requirements for preparing her outputs into printed or online vehicles.

§  Write and issue media releases and multimedia packages (including photos, presentations etc.) in support of selected advocacy and campaign activities of IBON International as assigned to PCU

§  Provide support to the communications needs of IBON International as assigned to PCU, including staff work in relating to international media targets for advocacy

§  Draft communications messages and propose forms, styles and media that will most effectively deliver the messages to intended audiences


Online and Printed Publication Management

§  Ensure the production of IBON publications and advocacy materials (including primers, policy papers, position papers, statements, magazines, books, factsheets, reports, brochures, etc.) that are assigned to him/her

§  Ensure that the IBON International website and its component sections are continually accessible and updated with new content.


Communications coordination

§  Coordinate with appropriate IBON program managers regarding communications needs for selected advocacy campaigns as defined by the IBON International Director.


Research Coordination

§  Conduct and oversee research and data gathering of both secondary and primary information needed for IBON publications assigned to PCU



§  Actively participate in collective planning and evaluation of the PCU annual and detailed work plans.

§  Perform any other tasks assigned by the IBON International Director in line with the mandated tasks of the PCU.



Person specifications: experience, skills and knowledge

 1) Essential experience:        

§  Writing analytical and policy-level articles on international issues

§  Management of publications

§  Work in a developing country and/or experience working with organisations from the Global South.

 2) Desirable experience:

§  Producing online or multimedia products (web-based content, audio-visual presentations and the like) to civil society organisations or decision-makers

§  Involvement in an international network

§  Involvement in an international campaign


 3) Required aptitude, skills and knowledge:

§  Researching, writing, editing and copy-editing

§  Public speaking
