IBON together with its partners, Vikas Adhyayan Kendra (VAK), Institute for National and Democratic Studies (INDIES), Africaine de Recherche et de Cooperation pour l'Appui au Developpement Endogene (ARCADE) and the International League of Peoples’ Struggle (ILPS) - Latin America, are pleased to announce the release of the IBON Primer on G-20: Global Economic Governance for Whom?

This primer describes the nature and workings of the G-20 to help progressive people's organizations and social movements define their attitude towards this new grouping whose views and actions affect the lives and the futures of peoples, especially in the impoverished and marginalized communities.

The Group of 20 or more commonly known as G-20 was set up in 1999 to prevent a repeat of the Asian Financial Crisis which struck in 1997 and spread to other regions of the world. After a nearly decade of G-20 meetings, an even bigger financial crisis erupted in 2008 at the heart of the global financial system and has since become the worst economic crisis to afflict the world since the Great Depression in the 1930s. The G-20 has failed remarkably in its core mandate. This latest financial and economic crisis has highlighted even more the structural imbalances in the global economy, which the G-20, even in its elevated status, failed to address.

The IBON Primer on G-20 is available in English, French, Spanish, Bahasa, Marathi and Hindi. The English, French and Spanish editions are now available online for download; other editions are to follow. The publication project was made possible with the support of the World Association of Christian Communication (WACC).
