On October 8 to 14, people’s movements and civil society organisations will gather at the People’s Conference against IMF-World Bank in Bali, Indonesia, as the Annual Meetings run from October 12-14.
On the same week as this year's IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings, this Conference will gather the broadest assembly of people's movements, non-government and civil society organizations adversely affected by IMF-WB's policies and schemes.
The goal to end extreme poverty worldwide by 2030 is now part of the World Bank Group’s (WB) new vision, adopted at its 2013 Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C. in April. The WB also adds the promotion of “shared prosperity” as another goal. The Bank’s strategy based on this vision is set to be unveiled in the 2013 Annual Meetings on 11-13 October.
Growing joblessness, financial instability and sluggish growth of the global economy threw long shadows over this year’s annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WB) in Tokyo, Japan. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Right to Development. Adopted by General Assembly resolution 41/128 of 4 December 1986, this Declaration defines such right as "an inalienable human right by virtue of which every human person and all peoples are entitled to participate in, contribute to, and enjoy economic, social, cultural and political development, in which all human rights and fundamental freedoms can be fully realized."
