On August 2, 2015, Ambassador Macharia Kamau of Kenya declared that delegates from 193 countries of the United Nations had finally arrived at a consensus behind a new development agenda for the next 15 years. After almost three years of consultations among various stakeholders and deliberations among Member States on a successor framework to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) that expire this year, a post-2015 development agenda was finally agreed after feverish negotiations that extended two days beyond the target date of completion

An end to poverty? WB’s new strategy unveiling at 2013 Fall Meetings

The goal to end extreme poverty worldwide by 2030 is now part of the World Bank Group’s (WB) new vision, adopted at its 2013 Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C. in April. The WB also adds the promotion of “shared prosperity” as another goal. The Bank’s strategy based on this vision is set to be unveiled in the 2013 Annual Meetings on 11-13 October.

IBON Int'l and the campaign for people's goals

SDGs: Can they promote sustainable development?

IBON Policy Brief on Sustainable Development Goals
One of the expected key outcomes of the Rio+20 summit will be the definition and agreement towards sustainable development goals (SDGs), similar to and supportive of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Indeed, SDGs are already being considered by some as a possible successor framework to the MDGs. Such an approach, say proponents, could allow the MDGs' focus on poverty reduction to be matched by complementary targets on the environment.
