WTO’s 20 years of servitude to TNCs and Monopoly Capitalism

Agriculture has always been on top of the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) agenda from the very start. Since it was created two decades ago to replace the GATT, WTO’s trade liberalization policies immediately found its way to open up agricultural trade markets in the Global South. Being the primary economic sector of the developing world, efforts to cut down tariffs on agricultural goods while allowing rich countries to dump heavily subsidized products devastated local economies and pushed the people – peasants, farmers, fisherfolk, indigenous people, rural women and youth, to deeper poverty.

Global activists welcome WTO Ministers with protests

On the opening day of the 10th Ministerial Conference (MC10) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Nairobi, global activists welcomed trade ministers from over 100 countries with a protest. Some 200 activists from 12 countries joined grassroots organizations in Nairobi, Kenya to protest 20 years of the WTO’s broken development promises. Simultaneous actions were held in the Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan and other countries spearheaded by the Asian Peasant Coalition and the International League of Peoples Struggles.

Dialogues for justice, public interest and the common good: CPDE side event at the UN Summit

A day after 193 member states of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the CSO Partnership for Development Effectiveness (CPDE) together with grassroots activists, faith-based groups and NGOs organized a side event at the margins of the UN summit to discuss pressing issues affecting the marginalized and frontline communities in the context of the post-2015 development agenda.

PCFS launches new edition of book on agrarian reform

A new edition of the book Neoliberal Subversion of Agrarian Reform, first published eight years ago, is now available after its simultaneous double launch in Penang, Malaysia and Yogyakarta, Indonesia on September 25. The book was launched by the People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS) together with IBON International and IBON Institute for International Development (I3D) in cooperation with the Pesticide Action Network – Asia Pacific (PAN-AP) and GRAIN-Asia.

Grassroots groups affirm collective action against land grabs, WTO

QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS) through its Asia regional office together with 16 other local and international organizations based in the Philippines co-sponsored and organized the “People’s Solidarity Festival: Strengthening People’s Collective Actions to the Global Crisis,” last September 10 in Balay Kalinaw, University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.

3rd International Meeting on Agroecology Launched in Brazil

Organized by the Instituto Giramundo Mutuando, a member-organization of the People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS), University of the State of Sao Paulo (UNESP) together with UFSCAR and the Movement of Landless Rural Workers, the Third International Meeting on Agroecology was launched last July 31. The organizers expect more than 2,000 participants including students, teachers, and producers in Brazil, Latin America, and other parts of the world.

PCFS spearheads SEA consultation on agricultural investment

JAKARTA, Indonesia – The People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS) organized the first Southeast Asia Civil Society Mechanism Consultation (CSM) on the Developments of Principles for Agricultural Investment, VG on Land and other priority CFS issues last May 23-25. The event was made possible by the efforts and initiatives of six regional organizations within the CSM Southeast Asia Working Group (CSM SEA SG). PCFS managed to induct new members and networks coming from Mongolia, Pakistan, India, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Philippines to the consultation.

PCFS breakthroughs in LatAm and the Caribbean

VALPARAISO, Chile—An international conference on Women on Small-Scale Fisheries was held last June 5-7 composed of delegations from Costa Rica, Brazil, Nicaragua, Peru, Honduras, Salvador, and parts of Chile. The event was organized by the National Confederation of Artisanal Fishermen of Chile (CONAPACH) to discuss issues faced by artisanal fisherfolk and the national fishing law in Chile. Other matters also included in the discussion were issues concerning the Voluntary Guidelines for Small-Scale Fisherfolk of FAO and the discrimination on women’s work in the sea.
