Global activists welcome WTO Ministers with protests

On the opening day of the 10th Ministerial Conference (MC10) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Nairobi, global activists welcomed trade ministers from over 100 countries with a protest. Some 200 activists from 12 countries joined grassroots organizations in Nairobi, Kenya to protest 20 years of the WTO’s broken development promises. Simultaneous actions were held in the Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan and other countries spearheaded by the Asian Peasant Coalition and the International League of Peoples Struggles.

Brussels protest urges transition to clean energy

More than 220 people joined a mass action in Brussels, Belgium on 20 March to protest the inaction of the European Union states on climate change. IBON International participated in the mass action, which was led by Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) on the occasion of the EU heads of state meeting on climate and energy targets for 2013.

Indonesian peasants slam land grabs, WTO

Thousands of peasants held a protest action in Jakarta, Indonesia to highlight campaigns on land grabbing, the junking of WTO, and continued hikes in fuel prices. Rahmat Ajiguna, Secretary General of the Alliance of Agrarian Reform Movement/Aliansi Gerakan Reforma Agraria (AGRA), said that the protest is the Indonesian peasantry’s response to oppressive government policies.

IBON Int'l and the campaign for people's goals

Civil-society organisations (CSOs) deserve more say in global-governance matters. In particular, CSOs from developing countries tend to be marginalised in international affairs. IBON International, a Manila-based international NGO, wants to make a difference. It specialises in capacity building for grassroots movements in the Global South – and has launched a campaign for “People’s goals”.

Thousands march in Cancun Dec 7

As the world's leaders gather at the Moon Palace Hotel in Cancun, Mexico for the 16th COP of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, thousands of peasants, indigenous peoples, youth, women, workers, advocates and many other sectors and communities from all over the world marched the streets of downtown Cancun this morning to call for 'system change, not climate change.

Cancun protestors demand to keep WB out of climate financing

People of Bangladesh along with other nations of the world protested in Cancun, Mexico last Thursday against the role of the developed countries and demanded to keep the World Bank (WB) out of climate financing.
