Seeking Accountability for Violations of Labour Rights in the Philippines
1 June 2023 (4 PM Brussels/10 PM Manila)
Co-organised by IBON Europe and the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines
The webinar seeks to gather labour leaders, trade unions, civil society organisations, activists and migrant groups to discuss the violation of worker’s rights in the Philippines and the implications of the results of the International Labour Organisation’s High-Level Tripartite Mission (ILO HLTM) held in the Philippines on 23-26 January 2023. The conclusions and recommendations of the ILO HLTM confirmed the blatant violations of basic worker’s rights in the Philippines as well as the lack of sufficient action by the Philippine government to resolve these.
The webinar will be headlined by top labor leaders in the Philippines Elmer “Bong” Labog of the Kilusang Mayo Uno (May First Movement) and Atty. Sonny Matula of the Federation of Free Workers and the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC). The speakers will share with us the major struggles of workers in the Philippines and the violation of their rights, the prospects of accountability under the Marcos, Jr. government and the expectations of the Philippine labor movement on the outcomes of the ILO HLTM. This webinar is being organised ahead of the International Labour Conference, which will be held on 3-16 June 2023 in Geneva, wherein the conclusions and recommendations of the ILO HLTM and the report of the Philippine government will be discussed.
