Organisations in Bangkok launch Thai Peoples Movement Against IMF-WB

IBON International is part of the Peoples’ Global Campaign against the IMF-World Bank, a peoples’ campaign composed & led by working peoples organisations with support of CSOs united in the call to junk the IMF-World Bank Group. Below is a press release released by Thai Peoples’ Movement against the IMF-World Bank, as part of the PGC.

The Thai Peoples Movement Against IMF – WB was formed and launched last June 12, 2026 by various peoples organizations in Bangkok, Thailand. The groups included farmers, fisher folk, riders, creative industry workers, migrant workers, indigenous youth, and legal professionals united under one banner and call: JUNK IMF World Bank!

The Thai groups committed to strengthen the movement, and connect local struggles with global resistance. They also agreed to collectively study common issues and problems, reach out to other affected sectors and communities in Thailand, mobilise various sectors in a coordinated manner before and during the IMF-WB meetings, and work in solidarity with other workers and sectors across nations as part of the Peoples’ Global Campaign Against IMF WB.

The Thai Peoples Movement Against IMF-WB underscored that “[i]n the past decades, the world has moved forward, but why have our lives moved backward? We work harder but get poorer.” They mentioned of riders having to work for 15 hours for little pay, of farmers not getting support from government; small fishers and their families displaced by corporate fishers; displacement of farmers, indigenous communities by big infrastructure projects like mega-dams; indigenous peoples becoming stateless; migrant workers in dirty, difficult and dangerous jobs.

The group reminded that “[h]istory taught us that freedom is not won by waiting; it is won by standing up! We must come together in unity and fight together to build the future we want.”
