2015: The Deadliest Year for Environmental Activism Worldwide

You are currently viewing 2015: The Deadliest Year for Environmental Activism Worldwide
The number of environmental activists being killed worldwide has been increasing over the years. In 2015, 185 deaths — the highest in history — were recorded from 16 different countries. 40% of these environmental activists were members of indigenous groups and 42 of the 185 are protest-related deaths.

This increasing number in the deaths of environmental activists poses a very alarming situation as it implies further environmental degradation, bastardization of ancestral lands, violation of indigenous peoples' rights, and violation of human rights in general. Hence, the call for international solidarity in demanding justice not only for these deaths but most importantly to the continuing murderous acts against the environment and the people should be intensified.
