IBON International's Jennifer del Rosario-Malonzo was recently interviewed by the UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service about the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the recent Human Rights and Business Forum and the role of the private sector in the post-2015 agenda.
Ms. Malonzo discussed the value of UNGP in providing a global standard and internationally recognized baseline on human rights and business operations issues. She also pointed out the need to strengthen national human rights institutions as one key measure in order to redress victims of corporate human rights violations.
Turning to the role of the private sector, she said that as development actors they must adhere to human rights standards and be accountable for their actions. Initiatives that fall under the category of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) should not be confused with human rights compliance, which is basic and mandatory, she added.#
