The event is part of the forum series, the People’s Review of the Sustainable Development Goals, with the theme “Rising above the health and economic crisis in the time of COVID-19.” The forum series is organised by the Council for People’s Development and Governance (CPDG) through the PH Civil Society SDG Watch, and in collaboration with CPDG member organisations and their networks.

For decades, the Philippines has been subjected to environmental destruction attributed to the unregulated practices of extractive and pollutive industries. While the government ensures the adoption of sustainable consumption and production (SCP, through SDG 12) and climate action (SDG 13) to preserve our finite natural resources and combat environmental destruction, it seems to be untrue to its goals: destructive mining operations proliferate, lands are being converted for commercial use, the agricultural sector is dominated by agribusiness and agrochemical corporations, and pollution seems to be endless. These aggravate the health and life hazards brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This forum aims to: 1) assess the Philippines’ progress in implementation of SDG 12 and SDG 13; 2) identify government laws and practices that hinder SCP and climate justice; and 3) propose policies for long-term economic sustainability and environmental protection beyond the pandemic. #
