Locating the Nexus of Trade and Climate: Advancing People-Centered Trade and Climate Action In Africa

17-18 August 2023
Nairobi, Kenya

In the Africa region, neoliberal trade policies and agreements, such as the the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA), facilitate the expansion of big businesses, and drive the exploitation of people and resources. The unsustainable practices of big corporations, such as monocropping and using hazardous chemicals in production, destroy land and biodiversity, and exacerbate climate impacts.

AfCFTA seeks to further liberalize trade in the region to accommodate big businesses. Civil society organisations are concerned about its impacts on the livelihoods, rights, and sovereignty of peoples in the region.

IBON Africa will convene its partners in a regional workshop and policy dialogue to tackle these intersecting trade and climate issues, and to create a CSO platform that would critically engage the AfCFTA. #
